New Fire Safety Drawings

Drafting/CAD Student Meets the Challenge!

Josh Riegle, a senior from Manteno High School who attends Kankakee Area Career Center’s Drafting/CAD Program, recently updated and completed fire safety drawings for the Kankakee Area Career Center (KACC).  This second-year Drafting/CAD student researched the various facets of KACC’s building layout and then prepared an extensive and accurate set of floor-plan drawings.

The process was initiated by KACC Director, Don Fay for several reasons.  First, and foremost, to provide a well-informed faculty to ensure student safety, second, to meet the standards and continue participating with the I-KAN Regional Office of Education’s Life Safety Plan and third, his desire to work with the local fire departments, providing current drawings which indicating locations of fire equipment and alarm accessories, as well as escape routes from each classroom in the building.   “As a Career and Technical Education Center,” commented Director Fay, “when we have an opportunity to place our students in a situation requiring professional work and responsibility, we take it!  They almost always rise to the occasion as Josh has done.’

Josh first received an electronic CAD floor plan from Commercial Electronic Systems.  Their floor plan included all the electrical components of the fire alarm system. Josh spent considerable time verifying the accuracy of the building layout provided, and then put in room names and numbers, exterior door designations, location of the access drives around the building, and fire escape routes to be posted in each classroom throughout the building. According to Steve Kelley, Drafting/CAD instructor, this assignment is a “Win-win, providing great professional experience for Josh, and allowing him an opportunity to use his talents to improve safety for others.”
